A tribute to women of color in the Caribbean

Women of color play a huge roll in stabilizing culture and community. While their beauty and strength can garner them lauded attention, they are often marginalized and undervalued.

The islands are celebrated for their welcoming culture, tasty food and lavished pageantry but the painful history of slavery, abuse and conditioning at the hands of European colonizers are often ignored and omitted. As enslaved people of African Ancestry in the Caribbean, sexual assault, exploited labor and dehumanizing servitude were part of the experience. However, so was rebellion. Countless tales of uprisings against their enslavers throughout the many islands included women fighting alongside men for their freedom.
